Microbe of Cancer.

o • DISCOVERY CONFIRMED BY A MEDICAL INQUIRY. TARIS, Dec. 12. It will be remembered that sonic months ago Dr. Doyen, the wellknown French cancer specialist, consented to allow the cases treated with his secret scrum to be hives- : tigatcd by a committee of physicians. According to the Journal, the inquiry has convinced the committee: (I) That the cancer microbe described by Dr. Doyon exists ; (2) that it differs from all other microbes known : (3) that it can be used as the base of a serum : and (1) that the cancer patients treated with the serum have evidently improved in health. It will be seen that the investigating physicians do not commit themselves to the statement thnt Dr. Toyen's preparation is an absolute cure for the dread disease. Additional Interest is lent to the report of the physicians by the fact that Dr. Doyen is being sued by Mr Crocker, a wealthy American, for \ the return of a iee of £1001) paid I to the doctor on behalf of Mrs Crocker, who died of cancer in spite of her treatment with the mysterious serum. Last February Dr. Doyen read a paper before the Academy of Medicine on his plan of treating cancer by -means of injections of serum pre- ' pared from the microbe as micrococcus neoformans, peculiar to cancer patientsf He stated that out of 126 cases treated since January, ' 1901, forty-eight gave no favourable ' result, forty-seven underwent more ' ' or less improvement, and twenty-one 1 at the time he was speaking showed '' no trace of cancer, and might be considered cured. It is claimed by Dr. Doyen that the dreaded malady ' has now ceased to be incurable, pro- ' vided that the treatment is begun in time and persevered with. \ It was on account of the criticisms 1 passed on the secrecy he preserved '■ regarding his method that the doctor consented to the appointment of '■ the inquiry committee.
