A Counter Move.
From the land of novelties and inventions, the Vniiiod States, comes the latest idea in the labour arena — the very latest method of dealing with that scourge yf civilised communities, industrial strikes. It is not more than a couple of years old, but has proved very effective in numbers of instances. It is the organisation of armies of skilled workcrs in all branches of industry who are held in readiness to proceed to any part ,of the States, w here a .strike is expected, to take the place of the strikers. Some little time ago a strike of railway employees in a certain city was threatened ; it was Known that the men had arranged to step oil the cars at a certain time without the slightest notice to their employers, leaving their cars standing, in thc hope that the ab;senee of skilled workers would compel the company to give in to their demands. The organisation we refer to was appealed to and they sui>plied sufficient trained men to carry on the service. These men were jilaced on the various cars, and at a given signal they were to take the places of the intending strikers. After all the preparations had been made, however, a settlement was arrived' at and extreme measures were not resortod to. But it will be seen that the now weapon is a powerful one in the hands of the capitalist, who will stick at nothing, where his material interests are threatened.
