FHIDAY, JANL'AIiY 20, 1901. (Before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M.) —Falso Pretences.— neorgo Allen (alias Neller) was charged with obtaining by false pretences £:, i 3s from wl{ Wilson >M lepresenting himself as an elec,:tncraii. and promising to supply cer,tain lanqis for the money. Sergeant Haddrell applied for «. remand, but this was opposed by accused, who wished the case to be proceeded with. After hearing evidence and it beI "iff . shown that accused hud been previously convicted eight times, u sentence of six months' .imprisonment was passed on accused. —Shooting in Self-defence.— Ngatoka Haira, a native residing at Bell 'Block, was charged with shootingi-Kobert Johnson, at Bell Block, on January 3rd. Sttoeant Haddrell prosecuted, and called R. Johnson, labourer, who stated that he was at Bell Block on the day m question. Accused camo up to him and told him to get off his property, Subsequently) taking hold ol a gun and threatening to shoot witness, who said he would got off as soon as possible. Accused again pushed him .away, and then shot witness in the right leg. Remembered 'iiothing more till Constable llpods came up to him, and asked what was -the matter. Thought that , was the- next' day. Was arrested while under delirium tremens. To the S.M. : Remembered nothing of the events at the time. Had -ten at Mokau with a mate, who had two bottles of whisky. Had been drinking at Waitara. Thought ho came along the beach, but did not know what he was doing. To Recused : Did m) t remember raising an axe to strike accused. Only knew he was shot. If it had been a white man who shot him be could not have said who did it. To the S.M. : Could swear it was accused who shot him. Knew him ■l>y his beard. Was not intoxicated at the time, but in a state of delirium tremens. Dr. lioathuin gave evidence as to Johnson's wounds, ami that Johnson was on the verge of an attack ol delirium tremens ; so much so that he had sent him to lie treated at the gaol instead of at the hospital. , To the S.M. : Hid not look on the | wounds as dangerous to life.
