WIDESPREAD TROUBLE. Russia Troubles Extending. ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 19. Ten thousand additional men have joined tbe strikers at St. Petersburg, including 7000 ropemakers. Special precautions have been taken around the palaces. • The Putiloil works chiefly make guns and railway carriages. A strike has occurred at Obukhofl metal works—also Caverument property. The railway employees at Warsaw are joining the steel-workers* strike. (Received Jan. 20, 5.56 pun.) ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 20. The employers rejected the demands ot the strikers /or an eight hours day, and the participation of workmen in the management of works, and the payment of wages during the currency of strikes. Many fear that 400,000 men will be involved in a few days. HEWCASTLE COLLIERY FIGHT. Doubtful Efforts. SYDNEY, Jan. 20. The opinion is expressed that unless the men are prepared to resume work on the coal-owners' terms a conference will be unavailing. (Received Jan. 21, 0.10 a.m ) SYDNEY, Jan. 2& •» A meeting of associated colliery proprietors discussed the miners' request for an open conference, and the wheelers' offer to accept a five per cent, reduction was declined on the grounds that the proprietors had already taken the steps sanctioned by the Arbitration Court, and under the circumstances cannot vary the ■ conditions they have notified "to the wheelers. This means that the proprietors will not grant any concession in wages or rates. Saunders, one of the wheelers who struck at the Newcastle Company's pit, was charged- «t Newcastle with a breach of the strike clauses of the Arbitration Act, and "was committed for trial. Light bail was allowed, and no other cases were taken pending developments. _, The bulk were held over till Monday.
