CHUISTCHUHCH, Jan. 19. I The body of a man who had apparently been dead some days was ! found this afternoon in some lonfij grass in an unfrequented part of Hagley Park. A revolver lay ne„r by, and there wus a bullet ' wound in the body, which Was identified as that of Arthur George White, a chimney sweep, who had been missing for some time. I , WANUANII, Jan. 19.
! A new arrival from America hod a narrow escape from drown ng today. He went for a swim at the Heads, and was carried over the bar Iby the tide. A nui>vl>er of siwctnlora on ' the shore thought the man was drowned, as they lost sight of him for half nn hourl. To the general I surprise, however, the man appeared on the south spit, hnving been carried ashore by tho breakers and current. A boat went to hits assistance, and brought him track to the Heads. AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. An elderly man named W. Stephen Hutchins, representative ;of tho Australian; Widows' Fund and Life Assurance Society, committed suicide by shooting himself ut the Central Hotel to-day. Although not lodging there, he was frequently about the hotel, and to-day he went nto a bathroom and shot himself. He was taken to the hospital, where, after an operation, ho succumbed. |For tho past five months the deceased,;! who fjwas never known to drink, had been at tho Salvation Army People's Palace, where he was J behind in his payments. j
