A NEW COMET.
SYDNEY, Jan. 5. [ Mr H. A. Lenehan, Acting-Govern-ment Astronomer, received a tclejgram on Monday to the effect that it new comet had been discovered by Barelly, of Marseilles, on December 28th. Some particulars were furnished, but, apropos of the discovery, Mr Walter F. Gale writes : "Through the courtesy of Mr Baraccbi I have received the cabled information concerning the discovery of |a> unexpected comet by M. Barelly at Marseilles on December 28th. Its proximate position on Monday evening last, was It.A. Xh. 19m. Declination, south, (> degrees JiCmiin. Its daily movement is given as lm. I 3fis. eastward, and 54m. of are northward. In the heavens this indicates an apparent path during the next ten days from near the star Thota "OH towards the star Nu Piscium, both of which are easily identifiable if the western sky is at all clear. The smoke present in the atmosphere will most likely preclude observations of this new comet for some time, Since it is probably faint at present. Hut the other comets recently reported are not likely to bo further observed, except with powerful instruments. Enoke's comet was seen by me on 13 nights. Its lustre did not notably increase, while its position was favourable for observation, and, as suggested in an earlier communication, it did not, become visible to the unaided vision. The periodical comet of Tempel has not been seen in Australia on this return."
