The Daily News WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1905. THE EXHIBITION.

The exhibition and carnival, tho closing scenes in which were enacted last evening, will doubtless lie long remembered by residents as marking an epoch in the history of the province. When the project was mentioned a't the beginning of last year there were many who were inclined to throw cold water on it, and to' say that the scheme was too big for successful achievement. Fortunately 'those who were responsible for inaugurating the proposal received very hearty support from the majority of local people, and the pessimists were -ignored. From the proverbial small beginnings much has come forth. The original proposal for a carnival week developed into the much | larger undertaking which has occupied the attention of Taranaki, and, indeed of New Zealand, for the past three weeks, and when last night the responsible heads of the management were able in their final addresses to refer to the exhibition as a- success in every way, it. must indeed have been a proud moment for them. And just here it may not be out of place for us to express a little gratification that an undertaking which was first suggested by this journal should have grown to such proportions and terminated so successfully. An exhibition such as the one under mention must have a far-reaching effect' in many ways. Its value as an educational factor is undisputed ; it introiduces business men and their efforts to 'the public and to one another, so that the one may be interested and the other instructed ; and, in Taranak'i's case, it brings the province and its resources more prominently into view. The excellence of the show has been attested by many, and so needs no further advocacy here. All that remains for us now is to congratulate the members of the executive on the successful result of their labours, and to express a hope that a new era of prosperity and advancement has now teen entered upon by the people of this naturally favoured district.
