Jan'. 15. ] The Wainui, from \Yeljlington, had ( a narrow escape this mornfng. She encountered a dense fog near the French Pass, and the captain decided to round d'l'rvillo Island. At seven the passengers were startled .by the ship striding, and rushed on deck. The passengers, mails, and some of the crew were Bent away in boats. Tile sea was smooth, but as the ship had run up on the rocks and was considerably down by the stern fears were entertained that she might slip off at low Water. Between eight and nine o'clotjk she came off. The place where the steamer struck is between Stephen and D'Urville Islands. No passengers were hurt, and after membarkation the steamer camti on to Nelson, where she is detained for further examination and for an inquiry to-monow.
