AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES.

INQUIRY INTO THE CAUSE. lr. Carrnthers In Explanation. SYDNEY, Jan. 12. The Government will grant pound for pound up to £SOOO on contributions for the bush fire relief fund. An expert has been appointed to inquire into the fires and report on prevention. Mr Carruthers, Premier, considers his cable to Mr Seddon has been Imisunderstood and that a wrong impression has been placed on it. The view he took was that he declined |to let this State appear to bo a .beggar for charity from outside bodies. If outside bodies wished to send contributions as a matter of good feeling and sympathy it was quite open to them to do so, but -he was not going to accept an invitation from them to become a beggar. He certainly did not say •at any time that relief was not wanted, but expressed the hope that this State was well able to look after cases of destitution caused by the sudden calamity.
