VISIT TO THE SCHOOL,

A Subsidy Promised.

Through tho valuable assistance of Mr E. M. Smith, M.11.R., the Fitzroy School Committee were favoured yesterday afternoon with a visit by tho Premier to tho school. The object in view was to placo before the Minister, tho urgent need of improvements owing to the insanitary state of the buildings. As many of the committee as possible were got together at very short notice, and wln n the Premier and Mr E. M. Smith arrived there were present to meet hini .Messrs Sleele (chairman), Davy, Lee, Griffiths, Weller and Mr <). .Johnson (headmaster). After inspecting the class rooms, porch, etc., ar.'.i se.'ing for himseir the evidences of decay, the Minister inquired what was wanted from the Government. In reply ho was reminded that tho hoard had applied for a subsidy of £2 for £1 in order not only to raise the school, but to provide additional accommodation, as owing to several estates in the immedinto vicinity of the school now being rapidly built upon, an enlargement of the school in tho very near futuro would be imperative, and if that work were done at the same time as the raising operations a saving of between £IOO and £2oo' would be effected. After some further discussion as to ways and means, in which Mr Smith, on being invited by tho Minister to express his opinion 011 the ronpiest, strongly supported tho appeal for a subsidy, the Minister promised that if th£ board would contribute £2OO the department would provide a similar amount, and, added Mr Seddon, "You can go right uliead with the work straight away." Mr Steele, on behalf of tho committee, thanked the Minister for his kindness in personally inspecting tho school, and especially for his promised assistance, and after wishing each of the committee a happy New Year the Premier returned to town. Tho committee are highly pleased at the result of the interview, and feel greatly indebted to Mr E. M. Smith for bringing it about.
