Tenders His Resignation. At the Taranuki County Council meeting, Mr C. T. Mills, the clerk, tendered his resignation, saying that the salary would not allow his doin® the council's work efficiently. The Chairman said he had only received the resignation that morning, and councillors therefore knew as much about the matter as he 3*l. Cr. Gray moved that the resigntbion be accepted, und steps taken to fill tjie vacancy. Cr. Hill, in seconding the motion, aid that Mr Mills had always been a most, courteous clerk"; in fact,' he had perhaps erred too much in this respect. The Chairman suid he had had twelve years' dealings with Mr Mills itiul had always considered his work very satisfactory. (Jr. McDonald could not wish for B better secretary. Cr. Hopson expressed tbp hope that the council would come to some arrangement with Mr Mills. Cr. McDonald advocated deferring the matter till next meeting. Cr. Gray spoke on the financial aspect of the matter. The Chairman explained that MiMills n'ceivod £2OO per annum, and I'ad to provide his qwn ollice. This .woultl reduce the actual salary to about £l<>o. lie moved that a committee consisting of Crs. Ilopson, Gray and himself be set up to go into the ma),lcr with Mr Mills.
