A TALE OF W(H)0(A)E!
Exciting Police Experiences at Fitzroy. It is not often that the efforts of jthe police to effect an arrest for alleged sheep-stealing are fraught [with such amusement to the spectators as is the cose which for' the past few days and nights has been occupying the, local "force" in the 'vicinity of Fitzroy. The mere fact that a detective, a sergeant, and 'several constables have been laying lin ambush or chasing a young man in a small urea, but have been completely balHed in their strenuous efforts lias caused considerable comment und not a little banter, esIpcciaUy as there have been a few incidents not devoid of humour from Jan onlooker's point of view. Once I the sergeant nearly effected a <-aP- | ture, but all he rc'ally caught was a 'Tartar, and some consequent sniveling, for the alleged culprit when j laid hold of in a cottage where the ollicer was secreted, is said to have promptly jumped on the stockinged licet of his would-be captor, und with 'a parting kick, vanished. Possibly a good stout pair of Number 12's ( would have saved the situation!, but jthe ollicer was as bootless as his errand. 'Jhere was at one time a smart chase by a constable across a paddock, but the pursued was a good sprinter and though the conr stuble shouted "Stop, or I'll shoot," the quarry dived through a hedge and merely left his cap ps a trophy of the. chase. Develop/, ments aro awaited with interest, as no doubt tho police will strain every nerve to uphold their reputation.
