Sydney shipping masters report that 1984 forefgn-going and ' intercolonial vessels, with a tonnage of 5,427,000, arrived in Sydney' last year. They declare that the number of ships arriving and the tonnage "*- ' show a considerable increase. Wreckage, including the manifest of the cargo of the barque Brierholm, has been found at Port Davcy, Tasmania. The coast is strewn for some distance with wreckage and cargo, hut there is no sign of spars or ship. The Brierholm is 180 days oat from London to Hobart. The recent yachting fatality at Wellington has trough! forth suggestions that yachts should be sub>>:t- -- Ed to some system of supervise js to seaworthiness and their proper equipment with life-saving appliances. The Marine Department explains that in 1896 regulations were passed providing fodfyachts carry- -. ing life-saving apparAis, but on 06108: submitted tojjthc yachting . clubs of the colony, the clubs were almost unanimous in opposing the regulations, on the ground that ' their own rules stipulated that ample appliances for life-saving should be kept on vessels. The Government therefore withdrew the regulation, but the club's control now appears to have been a dead-letter.
