Jan. 9^ Mr Chatuhorlain, in a letter replying to the Chamber of Manufacturer* invitation to visit Australia, and to assurances of continued support, says : "I think it would be premature to contemplates a visit until we are nearer a successful result in this country. The ugiution in the colonies ought to be followed by immediate action here, and until we icun promise that it would be unfair to our friends and supi>oi>u-r« that I should attempt preinu turcly to call forth an emlmsiusm which would be succeeded by re-action if the Mother Country did not immediately respond.'* Mr Chamberlain hopes, however, that although postponed for the present, a visit may be possible before very long, and declares that when the English people are convinced that their kinsmen in the colonies desire commercial preference as a urat step towards closer union of the Empire, and that they are prepared to meet the Mother Country in a mutually, advantageous arrangement he believes the people will insist on opening negotiations with this object,
