Shu retires with the great record of having started in 32 races, and was only twice unplaced, as the following table will (show. The pony Reduction (MauserModeration) has a dash of Musket blood in her veins, her sire being got by. the Tpxophilite horse. The' three placed horses in the Goodwood Handicap, run on the concluding day of the A.R.C. meeting, were jail descendants of Soult. Avalanche, the winner, just lasted long enough to evade defeat by a neck. The runner-up, Bonomiann, was the Outsider oi the race, only £27 being invested on her out of a total of £1741. The victory of Noctuiform in the Tenth Royal Stakes marks the ninth occasion on which Mr Stead's colours have been! successful in that event. Followers of L. Hewitt's and C. Jenkins' mounts at the A.R.C. meeting would find themselves considerably out of pocket. Golden Vein and 'Ailsa ran very disappointingly !in their engagements at the A.R.C. meeting. The accident which befell Nightfall in the Great Northern Deri>y at Ithe critical stage of the journey will be regretted [by sportsmen generally throughout .the colony. Besides spoiling what promised 'to bo a most exciting finish, there will always be a doubt in connection with Gladstone's win as to whether he is really entitled to tho honour of wearing the Derby insignia. That ho is a wonderfully improved horse .is ewloßced by his Summer Cup achievement, also by the way . in which he settled Boris, and thus avenged his Guineas defeat ; ,but Mr • Stead was confident of winning wfth Nightfall, and she was going so well ! when the mishap occurred, that I , think we can sufely say that Gladstone was lucky to be enrolled as ' the winner of tho Great Northern Derby for 1904-5. Hewitt's state- , ment is to tho effect that Gladstone when making his run 'bumped Night- . fall, which caused the latter to fall i buck, and just when she was dashing up to regain her position Gladstpnc ■ closed in, with the result that a collision took place, by which Night- , fall was brought down. After winning the Auckland Steeplechase on Tuesday overtures for tho purchase of Up-to-Dale were made cm behalf of Mr J". S. Colton Fox, an English sportsman, who is [ at present on a visit to the colonics. ! The prico offered for him, subject to 1 his passing a .veterinary surgeon, ] was accepted by Mr Roulston, and if the examination is satisfactory, he will bo transferred to his new owner ' at an early date. The tolalisator receipts for the A.R.C. summer meeting amounted to £68.420, which shows a decrease of £1426 on last year's total. Considering tho wretched weather conditions which prevailed on three out of the four days of tho meeting, this must be looked upon as very satisfactory. In tho Pony Handipap decided on the last day of the A.R.C. meeting, as the field turned for home, Mnrisa, who was close up to the loader, fell, bringing] down Logcritc, Butler, the rider of the latter, escaped without ' injury, but Carruthers, the rider of Marisn, was not so fortunate, as af- ; ter being brought back to the enclosure ho was examined by Drs. Itewes and Sharman, who found him to be suffering from a dislocated hip, and he was removed to the hospital, where he is progressing favourably. Mr G. G. Stead's Rubia (Stepniak —Madder) died last week! from inflammation of the bowels. Multifid's win last Thursday in the Visitors' Plate, at Ellerslie, represents the first success Mr T». O'Brien has achieved on the Ellerslie course since January 2nd, 1901, when Calibre triumphed in the SylMia Handicap. Gladstone followed In the footsteps of his full slister Gladsome by winning the Summer Cup and Derby at tho A.R.C. meeting. Mr A. Hughes, owing to illhealth, has decided to retire from racing, his three horses Marshal Soult, Ranana, and Lady Trent aro for sale. It is"pleasiipg to record the success attained by that popular hoisemaplJ. Golliaghcr. At Hawke's Bay, at the second day's racing, he had live mounts, and each one scored. Owners are remended that nominations close to-day for Gisboine R.C. summer and Foxton R.C. annual ; Monday next is the day for receiving entries for the Taranaki J.Cj summer*' TAKAPUNA HANDICAPS.
