PLAGUE AT CLARENCE RIVER
AH UNEXPECTED ODTBREML SYDNEY, Jan, : 6.Consternation has been raised an the Clarence River by an outbreak of plague, Rats had been dying largo)y (or some time, but it was not definitely ascertained that it was (from plague until tho death occurred of a couple named Plurn.mer. This led to a close examination of Young I'lummer (who wan ill) and another patient in the Clarence hospital who was brought froui lllmarra. I'recautions are 'being taken. (Received Jnn. 8.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 5. The report n received by the Hoard of Health regHruling the outbreak are that tho local doctors are convinced that at least one case is true plague. The boai<d to-day despatched officers to investigate ; in ithe meantime the local authorities are taking every precaution. They have quarantined the hospital and tbs homes of the patients besides I'lumer's, who was supposed to have succumbed to heat apoplexy, Tw« other recent deaths are believed ta have resulted from plague, Tho discovery was made through one or two of the patients now under treatment undergoing operations for appendicitis, when the ogainta** tion disclosed the plague bacillus, (Received Jan, 6, 1 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. S< The health authorities consider there is no cause for alarm regard* ing the plague ut Clarence River, and declare that Sydney is free from any trace of disease.
