DROPPED DEAD, London, Jan. 2.—The Australian stallion Aberdeen dropped dead in Ireland. WRECKAGE CAST ASHORE, Wellington, Jan. 3.—Portion of a yacht with the word "Hope" painted on it was washed ashore at Houghton Bay", near Island Bay, tonight. No yacht bearing this name is Known in Wellington. OAMARU BAND CONTEST, Oanjaru, Jan. 3.—The following are the results of the band contest under the auspices of the Caledonian Society. Quickstep competition, prizes £2O, £l3, and £lO : Woolston 1, Gore 2, Oaniaru Garrison 3. Waltz competition, prizes £2O, £ls, and £lO :Woolston 1, Gore 2, Dunedin Navals 3. Selection contest, prizes £SO, £25, and £ls : Woolston 1, Gore 2, Oamaru Garrison 3. Seven bands competed. Chess tournament. Oamaru, Jan. 3.—The following are the positions of the players in the chess'tournament. Davies 7 (wins), Mills 6i, B. B. Mason 6J, W. E. Mason 6, Pleasants 6, Clcland 6, Barnes SJ, Forsyth SJ, Edwards 4, Hamil I}, Adair IJ. B. Mason, Barnes, J. Mason and Hamil have each an unfinished game and Forsyth 2 games, BAD WEATHER AT THE ISLANDS Suva, Jan. 3.—A south-east gale has been blowing since three a.m., theglyss falling to 29.50. The Miowera and Navua were at Lancala, and £ho Miowera ceased loading. The lighters are abandoned with 200 tons of sugar at Navua, and arc unable to tranship their cargo. The cable to Levuk"a is interrupted.
