A PATHETIC COUNCIL MEETING. (Received Jan. 3, 11.34. p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 3. At Admiral Wireniu's suggestion the remnant of the warships late on Satur&ay night mado a dash at Chefoo. They did not encounter tho Japanese. The Taohai of Che-foo ordered them to disarm and interned the crews and soldiers. The Japanese destroyers, when convinced that they were disarmed, left the harbour to watch the entrance. Russian otlicers declare that for Ave days and nights the Japanese bombarded and assaulted "incessantly. The horrors of the scene defy description. Not a spot was, safe from shrapnel, and finding the situation hopeless Stoessel called a grand council. The meeting was pathetic, jthe officers being overcome with emotion. It was decided to accept honourable terms or die fighting. It is believed in Tokio that the Russian officers will be allowed to, return home on parole, retaining | their arms, and it is thought possible that the soldiers also may be released on parole, | The Times says that Stecssel has I done all the most exacting code of military honour could demand or human energy and devotion accomiplish. The British, American and Continental press applaud him.
