The Daily News THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1904. RAILWAY STATION FOR FITZROY.

II unanimity in the expression of public opinion may be considered to have weight with the administrators of the railways then the rising suburban centre of Fltzroy should not be much longer denied the possession pf those facilities which in these days make «o much for the betterment of a community. The general tenor of the proceedings at the puiblic meeting at Fitzroy last evening, when the question of a railway station for that centre was discussed very fully from all points of view, indicated the earnestness of residents in their desire tor improved means of communication. There is now a considerable and increasing population in and around Fitzroy, and this means a correspondingly considenable addition to the numbers of that intangible ttut important part of the economic world to-day—the travelling public. At present travellers from and to Fitzroy have the choice of the town and Smart Road stations. The difference in distance may be roughly averaged at half a mile in favour of the latter, but against that there is the disability of want of I minor communication, such as that furnished by the 'bus service to New Plymouth. Were there a station at Fitzroy it would undoubtedly be found that a- considerable numbei of arrivals and departures, now credited to New Plymouth, belong to the suburban area, and the extension of travelling facilities would moat certainly have the effect of aiding in the development of the district. The claims of the many should certainly have weight as against those of the throe travellers who, on the authority of one speaker iait night, now use the Smart Road station daily. Cattle trains are not proposed to be interfered with, and therefore shippers to the Waiwakaiho market and others would not be detrimentally affected. The amendment proposed last night by Mr Whitaker cannot, therefore, be taken seriously, especially as it is computed that at least half of those using the Smart Road station ore for or from Fitzroy. If nothing definite is dec 'ed soon residents will perhaps have an opportunity of laying the matter fully before the Premier and the Minister for Railways, who will probably visit New Plymouth within the next few weeks.
