Works Committee.

The Borough Works Committee met. on Thursday evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Cock), and • Crs. Brooking, Browne, Fraser, Cliff, Wilson, Collis, and Medley. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment, the bank overdraft being reported as follows Borough £2293 7s 7d, loan £1(5,202.

Mr J. Tuohy was granted a progress payment of £24 lis on his contract (or channelling and kerbing King-street. The engineer reported on the position of the council with regard to the contract for the Henui bridge let to Mr A. A. Pikctt, who wrote claiming certain works as extras, which the engineer disputed. The question was, after a long discussion, referred to a committee consisting of his Worßhip the Mayor, and Crs. Brooking, Browne, Clift, and Fraser.

Cr. Fraser intended that the council should abide by its engineer, Cr. Collis explaining that Mr Gibbon was not the engineer when the contract was started, and therefore wished the council to back him up in his interpretation o( the specifications.

His Worship the Mayor then loft the committee, first giving his opinion on the outside wader supply, saying he thought the increased charge at first proposed was a mistake. He considered if the old charge was adhered to, that is, five per cent, more than the amount paid hv burgesses, the receipts would more than doublo.

Cr. Brooking took the chair. The committee decided to accept the draft agreement submitted by the Bunk of Now Zealand in reference to the advancement of the money required by the council in lieu of the unallotted loan debentures.

The requests of Messrs J. A. Maisey and R. filed for certain works in Wallace Place wore referred to the engineer for report, as was an account from the Eliot iload Hoard for proportion of cost of work at the same place. Messrs Govett and Quilllam recommended that notice be given to Mr Mcintosh of the council's intention to hear his objection to drainage pipes being laid through section fid 9, near the Taranaki Hotel.—Referred to open council. Mr Mestaycr, consulting engineer, .submitted a written report on the waterworks contract let to Messrs M. C. Williams and Andrews. He said the penalty of £5 per day for non-fulfilment of contract should be enforced. As it was merely a recapitulation of hi~. veronal roport given in committee at the last counr. cil meeting the letter was reoelved. The assistant engineer of public works (Wrote inquiring what was the council's intention as to drainage in Upper Kobe-Btreet, as it was proposed to connect the gool with the sewerage system.—Referred to tho engineer to report. The draft agroeuiont between Mr Standish and the council, with ,e----ference to the conveyance of water across the former's property, was agreed to. Mr C.-'H. Burgess cotnplainod cif the manner in which Gilbert-street had been left after the .waterworks mains had been laid. The engineer was instructed to deel with the matter.

Mr Brooking wrote that he had no objection to Mb offer of a site for the proposed municipal buildUiga being loft open until legal authority could bo obtained for the council to deal with the matter, on condition that duo diligence in this direction was exercised.—Referred to tho open council. .

Messrs llowe and I'atorson asked that they bo charged half cost only of asphalting in front of their premises at the corner of Kinf? and Brougham Streets. Some discussion took place .as to whether,tho council, as owners of tho land, wore not liable for tho sum usually charged to owners. It was ultimately decided to adhere to the previous resolution to charge two-thirds tho cost.

Messrs Messenger and Ewing forwarded a list of jicrsons who have paid contributions towards tho cost of the east end bathing .shod. It' was decided to reply that until ft list of defaulters is furnished the council cannot grant any assistance.

The petition concerning water supply to outside customers, referred to the committee from last poiincil meeting, was then road, the question being referred to a committee consisting of the Mayor, and Crs. Clill, Collis, Medley and Browne. Cr. Collis said tho governor of i the gaol had promised to supply a i gang of prisoners to clean up tho paths and Marstand Hill, provided the council found tho gravel.—lt was decided to supply the gravel. The Christmas holiday for the clerical staff was fixed from December 34th to January 6th Tho engineer asked what sort of korbing would be allowed in St. Aubyn Street from tho Terminus Hotel to Young Street. Concrete kerbing was authorised.

Cr. CIW asked for rejMirs to Leach Street, opposite Eliot Street station, the engineer stating that the work lvad already been pencilled.

It was decided to repair the footpath in St. Aubyn Street from the Railway Station to I3vputslmni Street. '

The following tenders were dealt with Dog collars, lOdwards 5Jd, Ford sJ<l and .>j4 ; Kamson 5d (acct-ptod). Oats : MonteiUi, 2s per bushel ; Howe and Paterson 2s ad ; (J. Pons '2a 3d ; M. .lo es, 2s 3Jd ; Bewley and Griffiths, 2s 2 . M. Jones' Under was accepted. The tenders for renting tho abattoir paddocks wero referred to tho abattoir committed.

The engineer reported that the Henui bridge contract had been finished ; the Gas Company could not put additional lamps in Lemon Street, between Liardot and Gover Street; the footpaths authorised are nearly all tarred and sanded ; St. Aubyn Street is being ramlatod from tho Terminus Hotel to Mr Stiajgpooto'B,
