SURRENDER TO DRINK MEANS TROUBLE. (Par I'rMi A»soeUtl»n). DUNEDIN, Dec. «. At the Police Court to-day Percy Carter, alias Jackson, pleaded guilty to the theft of a rug, valued at 15s, a lady's belt, valued at 12s 6d, and a purse valued at 15s, with 2s 9d in money. Counsel for the uccused said that Carter was well connected, and had been respectably brought up. He hud been sent to 'the colony and had been in a fruit business in Nelson, but this not being successful he made his way to Dunedin, looking for work, und had given way to drink. Accused was lined £lO and ordered to refund 19s 3d, monoy advanced by a pawnbroker, and 24s expenses, in default one month's imprisonment. A charge of stealing a clock, valued at £l], was deferred till the magistrate was sitting.
