BUILDINGS VIOLENTLY SHAKEN The Waihi correspondent of the 'Auckland Star telegraphed on SaturUay : '•' A severe shock of earthquake Was experienced here yesterday afternoon, particularly in the town and eastern part of Waihi. Some of the buildings in Main Street were shaken in a violent manner. A cabinet in Mr Rabins' (chemist) shop was forced open, and some of the articles it contained were precipitated to the floor. Almost a panic ensued amongst the inmates of some houses. The shock was of brief duration, though severe. " Much anxiety was felt by the miners off shift , as to the probable effect of the shock in the mines, .where it would be an element of great danger to the various timberings underground, tJie sudden disturbance of which in some cases causes serious disaster. No casualties arc yet reported. "On making inquiries I learn that the earthiouake was not felt by the miners underground. In the Main Street the brickwork of Holmes' bakery was disturbed. The large building known as the Academy of Music was violently shaken, and the inmates of most of the shops in the mall* street rushed out in alarm. The earthquake, as '.ar as I can learn, is the first ever experienced in 'Waihi."
