Six entries ha,ve been received for the iband contest at Feilriapg—from the Hamilton, Hawera, Dannevirke Ivaponga, Young Mens institute (Wanganui), and Feilding. It was decided to extend the time for receiving nominations to the 10th inst the committee considering the prize money too large for such small support, and unless, more bands romimate they will most probably abandon the contest.

A charge of attempted suicide was preferred at Wellington last week against a middle-aged man named .Jules Chardavome, at the Magistrate s Court. Accused entered a plea ,0* guilty, and Sub-Inspector o'- | Donovan explained that in consequence of unhappy relations between Chardavome and his wife accused •wot himself in the head on Oct 17 Since that dato, and until a few days ago, accused had been treated in the hospital for the wound, ho had inflicted on himself. He was a tmker by trade, and had boon in different parts of the Australasian colonies. Early in October became from Auckland, and resided at a board-mg-house in Tutchen Avenue. Dr McArthur, S.M.. said : "1 made it a rule—l don't know whether it is right or not—and that is, [do not see how I can punish a man for an act which, had it been successful, he would not have teen here at all " Accused was convicted, ordered to come up lor sentence when called upon, and ordered to pay £5 towards the hospital expenses. As the defendant was leaving the dock, His Worship advised him to try and look at the brighter side of life.
