The Kev. Bogbie Piclon lias been appointed successor to Bean Carlisle at St. Mary's, North Melbourne. Mr A. A. Pikett returned lust evening' from Wellington, where he had been attending the conference of the Employers' Federation. Mr P. 11. Haseldeii', who formerly represented I'atca in the House of Representatives, returned froan Capetown on Thursday evening by the steamer Ayrshire. He is accompanied by Mrs Ilaselden. Professor Rutherford, of McGill University, Montreal, who was born in Nelson in 1871, and was recently awarded the llumford medal for researches in radio activity, is about to visit New Zealand to see his relatives. On Friday night all the members of the police force who were not on duty waited on Constable Mellsop at his house, for the purpose ol bidding farewell prior to his leaving' for the Spit, Napier, whither he Ims been removed at his own request. After the health of Mr and Mrs Mellsop and; family had 'been honoured, Detective Benjamin presented the former with . a g«ld pendant, bearing the inscription "Presented to Constable Mellsop by his comrades in New Plymouth as a mark of esteem on his leaving the- district." In doing so he expressed the regret with which they parted with so genial a member of the force, saying it was tempered with the knowledge that the chango spelt promotion. During the evening a capital musical programme was given, several civilians who were present taking part, and the gathering broke up with the singing of ''Aultl Lang Syne,'- 1 j
