A Brave Rescuer.
(Per Press Assoeiatlon), NAPIER, Nov. 27. A fatal drowning accident took place near Clive this afternoon. A party of young men from Hastings, who were bathing on the beach, got too far out and found the undertow so strong that they were unable to return, and called for assistance One or two small boats wero close by, and in one of those two men, George Hay and If. McLean, put out to render assistance ; but the boat capsized. McLean being unable to make the shore, Hay (who is a strong swimmer) brought him in and then went to the assistance of the others, returning with a man named J. Irwin. By this time one of the bathers, a man named A. Smith, employed at A. Jones and Son's implement works at Hastings, had disappeared, and another lnan named Allan Jones was visibly sinking, so Hay once nwro plunged into the water and, although i:Veufly exhausted, succeeded in bringing ashore in an unconscious condition. Restorativo measures were applied and Jones was revived, but Smi'h was drowned. No, further particulars are to hand.
