(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN. Nov. 20. At the Supreme Court the criminal sittings concluded. Thomas Beiv esford Matthews, aßVsd 20 years, was found guilty of wilfully setting fire to the stores of Towley and Iteast on two occasions, and was sentenced to a term of five years, Mr, Justice Williams remarking' that it was a case in which the principle of inr determinate sentences might well apply, but he had no power to do so. The Crowni Prosecutor, with the judge's assent, undertook to take such steps as may lead to mitigation of sentence if the youth shows an indication of mental improvement.
