FISCAL CONTROVERSY.
EXCHANGES OF CABLE MESSAGES. MELBOURNE, Nov. 26. Mr Hickford'g messuge to Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman stated that the preference meeting was a failure. Only 700 attended', though the meeting was widely advertised and prominent speakers announced. Mr Ilickforil added that a large attendance at a workers' meeting! was addressed by Mr Tom Mann, though almost unadvertised, which was unanimously condemnatory of preference. Mr Chamberlain's reply to Mr Pleasance was received yesterday. It says r "It coniirms my confidence and belief in the friendly negotiations between the colonies and the I Motherland. The result of the arj rangeinent is satisfactory to both, and will convince even Lord Rosej bery that you share our eagerness for closer commercial relatioaiß." I (tteceivKci Nov. 27, 5.33 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 27. Sir Malcolm MeEachem (Victoria) I was tho chief speaker at a meeting of the Oxford Pnivorsity Tariff Re; form League. He said that Australians had something to giv« in exchange for preference. Aus'ralians felt that they had been shabbily treated by the refusal to discuss the subject. He would accept Mr Pleasanco's description of the Melbourne meeting before Mr Hickford's.
