NARROW ESCAPE FROM A 'I'ERJilllLE CALAMITY, EIGHTEEN PERSONS KILLED, (Received Nov. 20, 9.27 a.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. l'J. Twenty-one tanks used in lighting railroad cars exploded at the People's Gas Company's premises in Chicago, killing 18 persons. A coal pile caught lire, threatening the gusometers, and the wuste pipes were thereupon opened and the gas escaped without igniting.
