Mr C. Millw, of Petone, has been ojijiointed manager of the OnehMiga Woollen Mills.
The Government lias appointed Mr P. Hayes, accountant in the Land Tax Department, to be Commissioner of Taxes; and Mr G. C. F. Campbell, Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, to be Valuer-General. Mr J. Chambers, of Auckland, was in town yesterday, being on .route to Wellington on a tour in a lino 12 h.p. De Dion Bouton motor cur, which presented a handsome appearance, and attracted a good deal of attention.
Gunner Palmer, who was feijled by the gun explosion at Fort Bollanc'e last week, was a nephew of Mrsi Parata, wife of Mr T. Parata, M.H.R. Palmer's mother, Tare Kairama, a sister of Mrs Par a ta, and one of tlße Ngai-te-rua-hiki tribe, lives on the Taicri native reserve (Otago). At the District Court on Tuesday, Mr Samuel, on behalf of the local bar, said that though it was an unusual practice when a learned judge took his seat temporarily, yet he wished to welcome his Honour District Judge Eyre-Kenny to New Plymouth, on his return after an absence of nearly a quarter of a century. The colony, he said, was to be congratulated on possessing a bench of judges of such high integrity and learning, of which his Honour was a worthy representative. His Honour in reply said the remarks jugt made were , the more gratifying as Mr Samuel had made almost his first ap-' puarance at tho bar before him, He : himself was bound to New Plymouth by ties which can never bo broken, and memories which can never be forgotten. lly the death of Mr John Church, I which occurred on Sunday morning, at Oamaru, North Otago has lost one who was a conspicuous figure in the distract for 32 years. Deceased was brought up in tho vicinity of Melraste Castle, and bad a clear recollection of Sir Walter Scott. Mr Church came to New Zealand in the sixties, anid in 18(i8 Was oclitor of tho liruce Herald. O n coming to Oamaru he acted as lolum tenens for Mr (now Sir/.i) Stoward, as editor of the Oamaru Times. In the early days of his journalistic career Mr Church was a str o mg> advocate of closer settlement of Crown lands, and ho remained staunch to that faith to the end. As Secretary of tho North Otago Agricultural and Pastorad Association, Mr Church has done a groat deal for the district.
