BOW THE MELBOURNE CUP WAS WON. ACRASIA'S FINE VICTOUV. MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. The Government Astronomer had predicted a hot day, and the prediction was fulfilled in a thoroughly convincing manner. As a social gathering Cup Day was particularly brilliant, and the dressing was superb. It was really too hot for effective promenading. Despite the great reaches of 'a« n and acres of * stand accommodation crushing was not altogether absent. Upjn tre j Kills UnH.of thouiki4*lsi jostled each other and stewed in. the heat. From a starting' point of view the day was ap. uifoinK'ud success. The Lip liiu not fall to a favourite, but Acras>a ,\vas certainly not an outsider, and at a nice price carried a lot of pub- I lie money. Then the big race pro- i ductd a struggle that ranks with its Dfjil traditions. The time was equul to Carbine's, which waa the best on record lor the race. As Lord Carwgan, carrying the good wkSijs of many thousands, whose chee-S v.eie for the plucky horse, led the Held to the straight it seemed lo.* a moment'.that the little hero of lasi
year's race**ai..d the Sydney Cup jvould again triumph, but Acrasia r slowly wore him down, and snatched. the victory. Naturally, wi;li so much money depending on them, .Wairiki, Tartan, ifarmont, and Lord .Cardigan held the largest leveei, aud their respective owners and Uaineis .were very contidmt of victiory. Wairiki came in for keen criticism, unci ■ the general opinion of experts was> that a horse with such bad looking legs could not succeed- in such company.'He was one of tiho most infirm looking candidates that ever rain in Melbourne. Their judgment proved correct, as the race had not been long under Way when Wairiki, jvho was in the centr-j of the field, broke down, and a little later pulled up, the jockey, dismounting.
