Dan Leno, a comic entertainer well known in the London music hall world, is dead. A cable message states that the Duke of Devonshire has been appointed president of the Unionist Free Trade Club. Mr N. J. King, Mayor of Stratford, is spoken of as a probable candidate for the Patea seat at the next general election, while the name of Mr B. E. Beckett, auctioneer, of Marton, is associated with the 11angitikei seat, Mr Henry Salmon, has been appointed clerk of the court at Carterton. Mr Salmon was rctii'ed from the police force some time since under the provisions of the Police Provident Fund. He was well-known on the Wuimate Plains, havingi been in charge at Manilla for some years.
