A GENERAL SCHEME. "The time is arriving for leaving Parliamentary lil'o," said Mr Seddon on Thursday afternoon. '' One c a n't last for ever." Mr Taylor : l)o you want to go to a colder climate ? Mr Seddon : Well, you'll be iu a warmer one by-and-bye. (Laughter.) Mr Taylor ; London will suit you all right. Mr Soddon saiid lie wished to say this lie would liko to have placed upon the statute book a measure to provide that every resident of the colony, at a given time of life, should be assured of some provision ag a inst wn n t. lie believed that Sir Harry Atkinson many years ago touched tlie fringe of this great question. He (Sir Harry) was a practical man, ami .saw that something was necessary to be done in this direction. From experience gained ho (the Premier) believed there was sufficient information in hnrad upon which a ■scheme could lie lxased to place the deserving residents of tlie colony beyond necessity and want at a given age.
In regard to the Civil Service, said Mr Seddon, every branch of the public service should he placetl in the same position as the police and the railway servants, and that there should not bo, as there was at the present time, a distinction as botween the various branches of the Civil Service. He included in the category the public school-teachers. The Premior hoped that next session would be a record session for the colony, and that Parliament would deal with some of these large questions which he had outlined, li< trusted that members would gi these larger measures a thought during the recess, so that they would bo prepared, if proposals were brought forward next session. —N.Z.
