The Itoroug.li Works Committee met on Thursday evening. Present.—l lis Worship the Mayor, (Vs. Ahier, Brooking, Browne, Carter, Collis. iVlotili\y ( Wilson and Wood.
The following recommendations were parsed
That His Worship the Mayor and the engineer report as to what use shall be made of tile council's section in Powderham-street.
That Messrs Mali McVeigh and Anderson's h-tler concerning encroaihim nL on Mr Uoodard's property near the Henui bridge be referred to the borough. That in repiy to his complaint against the manager of the abattoir. Mr Moverley be informed that th«' manager claims t.hat he was acting in his capacity us Government Meat Inspector, hjhl that therefore the mntj ter is not within the province of the j council.
'1 hat Inspector Stone be authorised to decline to. fancy-dress any carcase in'.il all ordinary work has been finiished, and then only to do s ( , without employing the men overtine, unless an extra charge for such overtime is made against the butcher requiring such dressing. That Crs. Ahier, Browne and ClilT report a? to the .advisability of closing certain streets in the borough. structed to make a survey and show the encroachment on 'the Carriugton lloud and Victoria Uoad from the railway crossing to the borough boundary. That Messrs Smart Bros.' letter protesting against the decision of the council to grant licenses to plumbers on their passing a test set ljy the sanitiary inspector Ik> received, and they be infornud the Council cannot see its way to depart from the resolutions ■alroaily passed. That a special meeting of the council lie held on Thursday evening next (October KUh) at 7.30 p.m. for the purpose'of considering the offers made by Messrs Brooking and Southey Baker itv connection with erection of municipal buildings, aiu! •Jso to appoint, an electrical enigi,cer. GKNKItAL. Accounts amounting to JU22JM were passed for payment. An account from the Sash an<l Poor (Company Tor work at museum was referred for inquiry as- to I he' power of the Museum Committee to order the same. Crs. Brooking, Ahier and Medley were appointed a .sub-committee to confer with blue North TCgmont Ro n d Board re a public demonstration on the day of the opening of the Mountain Uoad. r lhe Mayor mentioned that Mrs Copland was about to leave New Plymouth, and it was unanimously agreed that the -Mayor should call a public meeting for Monday next, to consider the best' means of making a public acknowledgement of the esteem in which that Valdy is held.
j The engineer's report was- received, in which it was stated that the excavation of the reservoir should be finished at the end of the month if the weather is favourable. A start has been made with the erection of pipe bridges at Mangorei Stream and at the gully by Mr King's, and the work should be completed at an early date. The road past the reservoir had been made passable for trnflic, as far as the council's liability goes, but nothing more should be done until the heavy material has been carted t 0 the ??ito .of the works. Another fortnight's fin? weather should we the work at llonui bridge nearly linisheii. The sewer pipes have been bvid in ('urrie-Mreet. Currie Lane ami Kingstreet have also been, laid, and as soon as the short hngth in Broug-ham-street is fmislud, it will be continued in Courtenay-street. He suggested that one side of King-street, from Egiuiont-street to Queen-street should be kerlnd. Various other minor works were dealt with.
