Lady Ctir/.on, according to a cable message received early this morning, w a s not in such a favourable slate of health yesterday, having hei n .somewhat disturbed duning the previous night. Lady Plunket will visit Melbourne for the Mel-bourne Cup season. She will be tho guest at Melbourne en Sir Reginald Talbot (State (Jovernor of Victoria) and Lady Talbot. Her ladyship- will leave Wellington on t-lie 2!ind inst., for Sydney.
Cable news this morning announces the death of no less than three well-known figures in public life. These are Mr Henry C. Payne, United States rostmaster-Cenera'l ; Bartholeli, the sculptor, and Clarence Dally, Edison's former assistant, uhj had suffered since 1807 from the results of experiments- with the X Hays, causing cancer in his wrists, hands and arms, both of which had been amputated. A very old identity in the person of John Calloway, of Ivikowakarere, died at the Coroinandel hospital on Saturday. Deceased, who was 80 years of age, leaves a large grown up family, including "Wally" Calloway, the well-known ex-footballer and athlete. Mr Calloway was one of the "pionevr colonists, and had residid in the district for half a con " tury. He was formerly a sawmill and engaged extensively in the timber trade. He w a s very robust until the Last few years, and had only been laid up a short time. The Opunakc Times lfcor'ds the death of Mr Frederick Hoe Wagstaff, late of Pihaina, which occurred on September 28th. Deceased had been for many years in business at Pihama, where he had gained the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in. contact by his courteous and straight-forward manner. For several years past he had been a great sufferer from ill-health but bom his trials manfully. He leaves* a wife to mourn her loss, who will have the deepest sympathy of a large circle of friends in her' bereavement.
On Wcdnwxlny evening a number of members of the Tukapa Football Club assembled in the Criterion Hotel in order to bid farewell to two of theiV most prominent players Messrs It. Dulhie and L. M. Tansoy, who are leaving the district. lioUl gentlemen have played wing forw'ards, the former for one season, and the latter for three. Mr J. Oliver, vice-president, occupied the chair, and in a short appropriate speech he presented Mr Tanse.v with a handsome dress-ing-case, and Mr Dutliie with a silver-mounted pipe, suitably engraved. At, the invitation of Mr I). O'Brien tho health of t:he guests was honoured in bumpers l . The recipients feelingly replied, the gathering breaking up with ringing cheors. Mi' Tansey left by the Takapunu for Auckland the same evening, while Mr Dulhie proceeds to I'unedin to-day (Thursday).
