Owing lo the short trlinc at its disposal the (lovernment could not now propose radical changes, which are reserved till early in the liext aession. It isi compiled to rely this year on economical reforms. Receipts for the ye a r ondied June 30th were £11,453,744, a Rhortwgo of £53,811) on the late Treasurer's estimate. The gross expenditure was £11,535,947, During the current financial year th© estimated receipts are £11,485,010. New taxes on private wharves are expected to yield £15,000, and £IO,OOO is expected from wharfage on gocdn. An amendment in-the Stamp J)uty Act will provide £25,000, thus making the j total receipts £11,566,523. Expenditure is (.wtimatixl at £11,523,000 ; I but toy various economies this will be j reduced, leaving a surplus of £83,I 000, which will be utilised to reduce the ovendrnft, brought forward from the last financial year, of £524,000.
