Fortune Gained by Chance

o ARRESTED STONE-THROW THAT BROUGHT £75,000

North Shields is waiting to welcome the return of one of its sons who had left the town in a humble capacity, but is coming back with a fortune of £75,000.

The most curious part of the story is that the fortune came to the man through a stone which he picked up to throw at a bird. Had he thrown it, North Shields would not now bo so excited. Albert Winter is the man's name, and he is the son of a bill-poster. Throe years ago, when he was about twenty-seven, Winter sailad from the port in the steamer Word as a fireman, and left the ship at Melbourne. His first letter, however, arrived but a month ago, and stated that he was working in the mines at Granity Creek, near Westport, New Zealand. The other day his mother received a letter saying that he was .coming home with £75,000.

Her son, it appears, stopped at the edge of a creek in the Mokihinui district and picked up a stone to throw at a wood pigeon. Something in the stone, however, attracted his j attention, and, examining it closely, he found that it was gold-bearing I quartz. Without loss of lime Winter took out miners' rights, and then with a mate pegged out his claim. Subsequently he sold his interest for £75,000, and with this he is now on his way to his native town.—Daily Mail.
