The Hotoiti passed Manukau Heads, for New Plymouth from at 5.30 last evening. Arrangements have been made at Sydney to transfer to the Uanffehire the meat cargo ot the Wjlcannia, which has been detained for docking. The Banffshire sails for New Zealand to-day. The Union Company's new steamer Loonsana. which arrived at Perth on Monday, was built by W. Denny and Bros., Dumbarton. She is 300 ft in length by 43ft ibeani. She was designed .to average 18 knots at sea under ordinary conditions on a draught of 12ft. On the full-speed trials on tte measured mile, with 475 tons dead weight, the average speed recorded was 20 1-7 knots per hour. On a six hours' continuous trial she averaged 19 knots. The Loongona was' constructed for the Melbourna-Launceston service under the "contract recently made by the Union Company and the Federal Government;. She is expected to make the run fr 0 m wharf to wharf, a distance of 276 utiles, ins.de sixteen hours. There is accommodation for 340 first-class passengers. GISBOttNE HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS. (Far. frtss Association). GISBORNE, Oct. 4. A conference between Mr W. Nelson and the Harbour Board regarding the deepening of U* T/antheru River to facilitate the working of Messrs Nelson Bros.' frozen meat barges, resulted in the board offering to make an arrangement by which Nelson Bros, are to deepen the upper portion of the river, the board to give £4OO towards its co ßl and P rovide a punt. It will also purchase the machinery .at valuation if it is desired to continue the work.
