Maoris and their Land.
PUBLIC TRUSTEE REPLIES 'JO ALLEGATIONS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 1. r J hi? l'uiblic Trustee replies through the press to tile statemonts made in the House ol Representatives oil Thursday regarding tlie administration of the West Coast Native Reserves. Regarding the statement that oi<lera were given on the Trustee for a drunken tangi, t.lie Trustee says tiiat he cannot accept such orders. It is incorrect to say that the natives are placed on inadequate areas, the fact Jjeing that many holdings are too large, with the result that the lands are neglected or surreptitiously leased to Europeans, 'i here is plenty of lajid for all the natives. With respect to Mr Kaihau's allegation that higher rents should he obtained by natives, tho Trustee says this is obviously incorrect. The present is much simpler than getting a lease from the numerous owners in a grant, aiwl afterwards distributing the rents. Most of the present leases were granted til) n re-valuation is made. The Trustee concluded "The great majonity of T a r a naki natives are quite content with the present condition of things."
