THE awful experience of PORT AUTHUR.
POSITION UEC'OMING CRITICAL. LONDON, Sept. 29. Le Matin' 9 St. Petersburg correspondent says that General Stoessijl reports that the Japanese Ueet r co-operating with General Nogi is raining shells into the port and town, and that the carnage is horrible. The defenders, who have been lighting hitherto almost under cover, aie now. exposed to B plunging lire from many points. The Daily Express' Tok-io correspondent reports that the newspapers are impatient at thq non-capture of l'ort Arthur. One suggests that a sharp sword be sent to. General Nogi with which to commit "iiarikari," and that 10,000 additional infantry and more guns be sent. The Japanese captured 300 junks attempting to run r the blockade at Port Arthur. A SORTIE THAT FAILED. RUSSIAN WARSHIPS DRIVEN BACK TO PORT. (Received Sept. 30, 10.43 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. The Italian naval commander in the Far East has cabled to Rome that Russian warships maide a sortie from Port Arthur, but were immediately surrounded and compelled to re-enter, after being considerably damaged'. IN MANCHURIA. JAPANESE PREPARING TO RENEW FIGHTING. (Received Sept. 30, 10.43 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. The St. Petersburg General Staß state that Japanese have begun an i offensive movement along the entire *■ eastern and southern front. VARIOUS ITEMS. Many Japanese soldiers are suffering from beri-beri fever". The new Japanese conscription regulation, just issued, increases the army to 200,000 men. Japan issues an £8,000,000 live per cent. internal loan at 92. Two Japanese alleged spies recently arrested at St. Petersburg have been released. Two pistons of the cruiser Ohog at Lihau burst, indefinitely postponing lien departure. The Japanese will extend the service of reservists of the secondclass from five to ten years. General I'iince Mirski (Russian Minister to the Interior) has withdrawn M. de Plehve's prohibition for the establishment by the Zomsitvos (local councils) of an organisation for the relief of the sick and wounded. The Japanese press is not dismayed at the raising of General Gripenberg's army, and expresses confidence that Japan will be able to place in the field a larger and much stronger army than Russia, while an arsenal at Kurc is equipped, and battleships and big guns can be constructed at Osaka.
