Captain George Lambert, late of the Takapuna, has relieved Captain Chrisp, of the Penguin, the latter • having been gnaiuod holiday leave. The Union Steam Ship Company has ordered from Mr Charles Bailey, Auckland, a steam lighter of about ninety tons for Gidborne., The lighter will be fitted with powerful engines. The hull of the steamer Australia, 1 wrecked at Point Nepean, at the entrance to Port Philip, was sold for £290 and the cargo aboard for £SO, A train will leave town for the breakwater at 11 a.m. to-day tc meet the Rotoiti, inward from Nelson, and another at 8.20 p.m., to connect with the same steamer outward for Onehunga. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of the United Kingdom, at a meeting in Manchester, appointed a committer to approach the. shipping companies for a reduction of freight rates to South Africa and Australasia*
