The great racing events ofthoyear are drawing perceptibly nearer. With J Uairiki and Canteen, absent, the New Zealand Cup will not be so interesting, but the well-adjusted weights should nevertheless produce a good ses in this, year's Cup and perhaps the contest. It is but seldom that a handicap of such importance starts o tt with a stone dilTei-emco between the top weight and tho next horse, but there is no idoulit as regards the horses in this year's Cup and perhaps the horse® pf tiia cioljony, Achilles is in a class by himself. Still the steadier of
10 stone c a uses o ne to hesitate a little before endorsing backers' opinions, represented by his quoted price of 10 to 1. Nonetto has been awarded the second pl a ce with 9.0, and
there can bo lit,tlo doubt that should tho Seaton Delav&l horse be landed sound and well at the post ho will justify the opinion. He has Some great performances to his credit.. I must confess; to ft liking for Martian, not only oi\ Recount <jf his Australian form, but because he!
spems to bo as thorpugihly horse as you could (ind in New inland. Should Convoy start hp wij 1 havo to bo reckoned with at B.(i, I though I should think it prpbab(e that ho will be reserved fo.v a short-; er race, .rather than 1® in winding up lor a hand twp.-miile gallop. Lady Iluluwjiyp perhajw bo passed over in favour of -Halberdier (8.0).' So far ho has given some reason to suppose that ho will see
the ppst, and if so is bound to run well forwand. Ghoorka, ltomi'o and Grand Rapids are fpllowad by Melodecn (7.11) who might reasonably be made an early selection). He is a line stayer, and reported to be dO- - soured Work. Oblivion XI. is ap-' other hoi'sp that may possibly jump into favour later on, though so %r the horse has shown no form. Shrapnel has 7.6, but there is always a doubt if the Workman gliding can
stuy two miles. A horse Ido not altogether pass over is Full Cry. At Christcliurch last Easter he turned
into the straight with Graatd Rapids and he can do better, though wheth I er he Cam get the extra half-mile is! doubtf Jl. If the race should fall, to a mare this year Float (6.18; seems to be tin? best early selection. Among the light wvilghts thciro can be little doubt that Mahutong shows best, though possible Sandy ajid Secret Society may foe given a chance. Of Into years the winners, as fpr instance, Idepjl, Tprtulln, Halberdier, etc., have so often come from the North IsliuwJ that we have como to look for a North Island horse to win. F.ven last year there was practically no'h : ng to choose between Wairiki, Achilles anrl Canteen. At present I incline to rtlic prospects of Melodeon. though witli such good Southerners as Martian, Lady Lillian ;uvl Ituluwayo the race may go there ag u in this year.
Martian is quoted at 10 to X for the Gyp. |
Crfchton .(formerly Oxydonor) Ul coining into favour for tho Stewards Handicap. The Lochiel colt is well sjnoken of. Tho Hawke's Hay J.C. meeting VJ I the Stli and Oth has not attracted good fieUly, is regards either number or quality. The following may run well Hack Hurdles, Koin u ny Girl ; King Ixtvauxl Handicap, Madrigal or Stronghold : Hurdles, Hi|>powui ; Welter, lllu/.er or Handwork ; Waipatu Hack, Cutspaw ; Flying, 'i'he Stake. At the present day most racegoers are apt to think that racing is ahead of what it was a hundred years ago, both as regaixls public intercut mid the amount of money changing hands, From the Sporting Times of just one hundred years ago Ihe opposite idea may be gathered. It contains a report of Mrs Thornton's match, a race between two horse* riddwii by their respective ownors over a distance of four miles for £.IOO wnd a side wager «f over £IOOO. Tho race was held on the last duy of tho York races, and tho atU-nduii was estimated at 100,000, and ll.e limount of money that changed han.„. over the evimt (in which tliu ludv was defeated) at jtaoo.ooo.
It is wonderful how soffie old horses keep going. Dingo, who won the Steeplechase at Sydney was "aged" in 1808. Old Nor'-west was not bid for at a sale the other day, but it would not be surprising to see him win again. It is not much more than a year since Jus won the Wellington Steeplechase. Okoari has arrived at Te Mahanm on a visit to San Fran. Lillian Mid Princess Cole, a couple of bro»d marcs owned by Mr (3. Humo, of the Wairarapa, were a'so booked to \ isit San Fran.
Calibre is bowling along in great style at Riccarton. He looks a bettor after his racing at Ashburton.
