WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received Uio following cablegram from the Agent-Ge-neral, dated 17th inst. : The mutton market is quiet. Little is doing, but good feeling prevails. There is a scarcity oi prime quality mutton, and heavy carcases are dull of sale. The average prices to-day are—Light weights -ijii per It), heavy weight 4Jd, other North Island brands to id, River Plate 3 5-8(1.

Lamb.—Market steady, but the demand is only motlerate. Average price to-day of New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brands sfd, brands other tian Canterbury 5Jd. 'the beef market is very weak, und supplies of American chilled beef are . very large. A considerable quantity of New Zealand beef i.-» •being held for ia rise in price. Average price to-day of hindquarters o; 1 New Zealand lieel' is MSd, ton/quarters 2Jd. Quotations for New Zealand beef are nominal. There is better demand lor butter, and signs of improvement in price. The average price to-day of choicest New Zealand butter is 99s per cwt. A small quantity of white, make of Australian has arrived and is selling at 105s ; Danish 12l!s. There is good demand for cheese. The average price to-day of finest New Zealand cheese isi 43s per cwt. The hemp market is firnr. The price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wellington grade on spot to-day is £29 108 per ton. The price of -Manila hemp, fair current grade on spot, to-day is £36 per ton.

The cocksfoot seed market Is quiet. Buyers are not keen to do business. In the meantime the average price of bright clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b per bushel, on spot, to-day, is 52s per cwt.

CAMBRIDGE HORSE FAIR. HAMILTON, Sept. 19. What is perhaps the premier horse sale of the colony was held during the last four days at Cambridge, .720 horses of all classes being sold. Buyers were present from all parts Mif the colony, and competition was ibrisk for every description oi horse. Hacks and light harness horses were Snot up to the usual standard, the 'entry in these classes containing too Enany undersized ami weedy ani-n-ials. This no doubt is largely t.e ixesult of so many good animals ®oing away at the time of the Boer .•War. Suitable marcs to breed from Hire not plentilul, and geldings six ♦to nine years old, lit to work every slay, are not in the district. The jvardings of draughts would do credit to any district in the colony, a lif-uture being the splendid display of itlhree-,year-olds. Outside buyers took m large number away. The highest iprice obtained wias £OO for a four-Jtear-old by Better Times.
