Proposed Bacon Factory.

ADJOUKKISD MEETING. The adjourned of I hose* in-t-irested in the formation of a cooperative bacon factory company in New Plymouth was held in the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was an attendance of about thirty, Mr U. Price in the chair. The chairman, in explaininig the meeting had been, called to receive ami consider .a import on the alternative sites offered, stated that the committee had considered it advisablo to leave the question in the hands of experts-, lie then culled upon the secretary to read the reports furnished by Messrs Orbell and Mackay, of Itnglewood, and Mr Moloney, liahotu, upon the two sites under offer, namely, Mr McAlluni\s, Frankley Hoajd, aaud Mi' Drake's bacon factory, Fitzroy. The reports were very lengthy, and entered into details. That oi Messrs Orbell awl Mackay favoured Ui*.' Fitzroy site for the following : loading reasons : The Frank ley ltoud site was not auitable soil, the stream not sufficient for the supply of water power, while the refuse turned therein would be earned through the town, thus raisiimgi objections by the Health Department. The Fitzroy 'buildings, on, the other hand, were good and suitable. Mr Moroney reported that the Franklcy lioad building was totally unsuitable, and the soil was "rottun" from tannery refuse. It was also too close to the borough and a difHculty in getting a licesu.se anight arise. Fit'/roy. • in the opinion of Mr Moroney, was ; very suitablew

In reply to a complaint by Mr Okoy tho chairman nmiutiwned that tin* committee had not exceeded its j>uwers in engaging the experts, as il was far better to know where they stood than bo in the dark. He defended tlie appointments, on the ground that Mr Moroney being conversant witii tho bacon curing industry, was competent to give an impartial opinion. As regards Mr Orbell, that gentleman had carried out work relating to water power all over the district. Mr C. Andrews e a id that as a member of the committee ho was not aware that Mr Moroney had any connection with Mr Drake. Mn W&rran asked if the committee had considered whether as many pigs would be received at Fitzroy as at Frankley Itoad, the chairman replying that the receiving facilities at tho former place were superior to those of Frankley Hood. Mr Colson thought the establishment of a factory at Fitzroy would be a great convenience. lnglewood people were satisfied with theirs, and , it behoved those present at the' meeting to keep the matter alive. Tho 'bacon factory would not be a, payable concern unless* everything was utilised, such as offal, while sausage -making should be gone in for. All previous losses had occurred because of the wastage allowed.

Mr Okey pointed out that they could not retail pork or sausages in New Plymouth unless the borough abattoir charges wore paid. In reply to a question the chairman saiid pigs were sent from Opu liako to Wellington, and if the southern firms could make the business pay suivly tliey could. Mi' Okey urged if it was intended to spend between £3OOO and £4oou care must bo exercised. Possibly the interest on tho proposed outlay would pay for the cost of joining the ImgJewood factory, which was a success. 'Die chairman considered the whole yueation was the advisabieness of forming a company. If t;»e Health Department objected to killat Fitzroy they eoulid still kiU at the abattoirs lor the pork sausages. In a limited portion of thy district Mr Crockett hud been pro* mined that 163 shares at £5 wou» J bo taken up. Mr Andrews said the providing; or a killing station at Ukato wou'ia mean that hundreds of pigs wi/u ,u be obtained around that distoiijt, which would otherwise not eo aw here, as farmers. Could take them t„ tne slaughterhouse during the Viuytimo. lie pointed out that on.).dead meat the rent and cost of freight was n.uch less than that on live stock. In the opinion of Mi- Druliu pigs arriving during the day were not in such goad order us those brut igihi during the cooler hours. Ovcl'k iglu killing was all right provided the pigs arrived early, Mr Street considered the uoi mtj should bo canvassed, us it was useless to form a company witl ,oui sufficient capital and u relii able supply of pigs. There were in his district iiumy settleru who w) ouhl take up shares ,mit not supply fpigs. As Mr Andrews had poiinted outf thero was a danger in dealing \witli piga in two months only out. of the yoar, and this at a season w|hen tliey hold had pigs available. The secretory having read, the .recommendation of the committee appointed at last meeting: ''» That 1i,.committee, alter considering the imports of Messrs Uirbeil and Mackay and it. Aioroney- recommend that a bacon curing tuiu pork supply company, bo formed, with a capital of £.5000, oivideu into 1000 sihares of X 5 each, and that £3OOO of the capital bo called up for the purpose of purchasing MiDrake s bacon factory premises, plant, etc., as contained in his oiler at «, cosit ot £ISOO, the balance to go to Uic necessary improvement at the slaughterhouse and to purchase pigs to enajble the company, to at once commence business; the conimitteo 'also recommend that a killing Station he erected at Okato should the company be fonmed." Mr Colson moved that tiie re- ' commwidatiion beajdoptod," Mr Croc- ' kett seconding, : Mr Street moved ns ajnentl- i meiit that bof(WG the company be j formed a canvass 0 f the district be | made to ascertain tiie probable supply- j. | Mr Honeyfield seconded. j The chairman maintained that if a ; canvass were imude U,.fore the company was formed, tae matter would B>o no further. Th«ro were enougli pigs in the district to support a company, without mten'c.-iiig a t all with Inglewood.

Mr Okey questioned the wisdom of incurring the expmsu of tunning a company without knowing wlua support was forthcoming, Mr Warren maintaining the company nhould bo formed lirst. After desultory discussion, Mr fatreet having withdrawn his amendment, Uie resolution w «s carried Liy I to 1 the majority of those present refraining from voting. Mr btreet thereupon movud as a motion his original amendment—that a canvass of the district be made for shares .nrnl * supply of pigs, the canvassers to report to a future mooting." On Air Okay's sugtgv*.y.lioii a statement of preliminary expenses was an on the table, (showing umongst other items Jt] 3 1 i 0 JU tws b,and Macli «y, ami Juio to Mr Moroney, other sundry accounts to- « iiig £8 is (,d. pavment of these amounts was satisfactorily a, these accounts was satisfactorily arnuigvKj.
