FOOTBALL.
BIUTISIIERS AT SYDNEY, (For Press Association.) (Received August 81, 10.19 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 81. The British team defoatxd New South Wall's by live points to nil. Play, until the last quarter oi an hour, when it livened up, was uninteresting, neither side playing up to form. The ground was slippery and treacherous. The Brilistas, in the lirst hall, playing against a still wind, gained an advantage from a try by Bush, Bevan landing a goal. In the second half play was even, and more aggressive; but no additional score was registered, In the latter part the Britishers played a man short, Llewellyn receiving a nasty injury to his knee. | The Britishers sail by the Aorangi ■ on .September sth.
In commiiiMng on tlie AucklandTuranaki mau h the Opunake Times says: '''Wallet Wilson (Opunake Club) replaced H. Wilson (Hawera Club) in the front rank, and played well considering ho has not played a game lor two or three months." Wonders never cease in the selection line, and tiliis might easily Lie classed as one of the most phenomenal. The Taranakl Rugby Union made a profit of about £110(1 over the recent | big fixture, having obtained the use jof the New Plymouth Recreation Grounds at a nominal figure. The grounds want a good deal of improvement. This improvement would benefit the T.R.U. Tlie union is prepared to help, of course.i It offers the board the princely sum of £lO for the use of the ground for the Tara-nnki-Manawatu match ! The board thought it had been shaitfbily treated, and declined.
The match Manawatu v. Taranaki will be played at Taumata Park, Eltham, and not in New i Plymouth, the Rugby Union having bean unable to arrange a satisfactory charge for tho Recreation Ground. Otago defeated Hawke's Bay on Tuesday by six points to three. When the New South Wales Rugby Union exonerated Dobson, the British footballer, in connection with the Newcastlo incident, it did not deal with the question of tho Britishers leaving tho field. The council of the tin on has now adopted a resolution expressing disapprol»ation of the improper action of tho British captain in taking his men off the field, and tho resolution will bo forwarded to tho English union. The second game in the annual in-tor-eollego footlmll tournament was played at Wellington yesterday between Wungonui and Christ College (Christehurch). The latter won by twenty-nine points to nil. Tries we.o obtained >by Fryer (3), Nelson (2), Tonka and Murray. Throe tries were converted.
THE ASSOCIATION GAME, TO-DAY'S REP. MATCH, AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. Tho first representative match, in Association football tliut has ever been played in Taranaki will take place in tho Recreation Grounds this afternoon. The New Plymouth Association Football Club was started during tho present season, the promoter being Mr S. Clark, who is not only an enthusiast, but a player of some considerable experience, ho having represented tho Auckland district iu representative matches for the past three years. After considerable difficulty in obtaining tho names of old "soccer" players, Mr (;iark called a meeting of those interested, and the club started on its way, playing its lirst match against a team frou Omata. Sinco then steady practice has been tngiagid in, and as the local mtn seemed to be playing a good game, Mr Clark, who had been elected captain, set to work to arrange for & visit of a representative team from Auckland, where the game is largely supported. At an outcome we have to-day's fixture.
His Worship the Mayor will kick oft at 3 p.m., and it will be interesting t 0 note how he acquits himself. Our Mayor, however, is equal to officiating in any number of ways, so doubtless ho will sot the ball rolling in orthodox style. A wag asks how ho is to get out of the road of the players, but that should bo an easy m a tter.
Messrs W. W. Murton and H. F. Russell, who played in the some club in Ipswich, will a ct on the line, and Mr Riddles will officiate as referee.
Tho Auckland learn is drawn principally from tho Corinthian Club, of which the New Plymouth captain was formerly a - member. There aro two of that ilk among tab visitors, one of them being a rep. man, and the other making a name for himself in his second year of seniorgrade football.
The Corinthian Club ia comprised mostly of renegades from the Y.M.C.A. Their desertion of tire old colours happened in this wise. Six years ago a challenge cup was presented for competition amongst senior clubs, the donors being' a wellknown firm of distillers in the Old Country. The Y.M.C.A. en|tered for the competition, and after being runnel s-uj) f o r two years, annexed the cup in I<JO3. The Y.M.C.A. authorities, however, although they had allowed tho team to compete, refused to have tho cup placed in their rooms, as tho inscription on it betrayed its origin. The players took this as an affront, resigned from the association in a body, and started tho Corintlhiun Club, which this year annexed tho trophy, and had no scruples about receiving it. Several of the visitors have earned higih distinction on the field, Cowan being well-known from his connection witlh the game both in Dunedin and Auckland, whilst Dugmore, the goal-k«>]>er, isi said to be the finest Association player in the colony.
TARANAKI (Maroon). Goalkeeper : Frost. Full-ibacks, Clark (capt.) Bullock. Halves : Heid. Coates. Itidland. Forwards : Dynes. McAllum. Truman. Ambury. McAllum. NOTES. The Auckland team Is staying at the Terminus Hotel. This evening tlie visitors will be entertained at a dinner and smoke concert at the Terminus Hotel, his Worship the Mayor presiding. They will return to Auckland by Saturday night's steamer.
