The Cleverest Thief.
At Brighton Quarter Sessions the other day Jamea Turner (seventyfive), fitter was sentenced to live years' penal servitude for stealing jewellery valued at £1,500 from the Grand Hotel there hi February lu«t. The accused invited u. jeweller to semi to the hotel jewellery for selection as a giiXfc to a daughter about to be marrwd. An assistant was showing him the articles at the hotel when Turner suddenly darted off with a diamond necklace, a diamond pendant, and a diamond and emerald brooch Ho was arrested- at Droit wich in Apl •'if. Tumor was shown to be a member of a notorious gang, and had undergone various terms of ponal servitude, and haul pursued a life of cnine since 1858. With his wife and others he was concerned in the groat jewel robbery in Paris some y^ ls -70,000 irancs was stolen, and also helped to rob the mail between C "«n street and Ostend.
