VICTORIAN SCANDAL.
REVELATIONS 11Y A GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, (Received August 20, o.,'ij a.m.) MELBOURNE, August 19. At the Butter Commission Mr Scarlett, formerly inspector of grain in the Agricultural Department, gave ovi'dence that in 1900 Ikj saw a Government stamp being used to stamp butter-taxes at Messrs Ilartrum and Sons' establishment. ' He saw the same thing in 1901. In both cases it was too early in the morning for the butter expert to visit the premises. A Government stamp had previously mysteriously disappeared. He did not report the matter for fear of dismissal, and alleged that he was subsequently dismissed for reporting a man who was robbing the Imperial Government to the extent of £lB5. lie also alleged that he reported to Mr Taverner that he (Scarlett) haS been asked, but had refused, to allow a shipment of fodder to go without weighing, and that Mr Taverner told him he ought to be ashamed of himself and ordered him out of his office,
