The member for Wnirarnpu, Air Buchanan, gave the House some interesting information a few nights ago on the matter of parental control of children. Old maid.* and bachelors uie famed for Having very complete knowledge on the bringing up of chiVlrcn, and as Mr iiuchanan is an elderly bachelor, his opinion on the subject of parental control must be valuable. When the Prevention of Infant Mortality Hill comes on Messrs Ailken, liuchanan, l,aing, lledfoitl. Mc'.Mvh and other gentlemen will be expected to impart heaps of useful information, to • the delectation of a crowded ladies' gallery. After a most successful season throughout New Zealand, where crowded houses have been the rule, Mr Spun- once more departs for Australia, opcuing in Melbourne on August 27th. Prior to bin departure Mr Spurr will give one rurewell performance in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday next. For tho reason that the visits of Monologue entertainers to these shores are few and far between they are the more welcome and interesting when they do eventuate, so it is not surprising that crowded houses have greeted such an artist of celebrity as Air Mel 11. A few weeks ago a man who was driven late at night to tho local hospital complained to his Mends at Stratford that he had been overcharged for the conveyance of himself and n ho.spit.ul patient. Tho charge made was ton shillings. The. horoug.i council resolved to investigate the occurrence as the alleged overcharge was made by a cabman I. censed under the borough bye-laws. Tho driver appeared before the works committee last evening, and explained that the charge was made at the shillings an hour for each person according to schedule, rales, the actual tame occupied being an hour and. ton minutes. The council was sulifiiicd with the explanation, and that there had bet* no overcharge. The driver said the passengers made no complaint at the time. T.iero is a buautiful ibunigk' just now over the borough reservoir contract, the contractors being kept dangling about, and most unkind things being said about the council ,iiid its consulting engineer. The precocity of the average colonial juvenile is generally acknowledged—and tolerated. There Is one: ■point, however, on which it would be well were parents to exorcise more, control over their offspring (and themselves also, for I hi' matter of that, in too immy caws), for otherwise it would seem almost Inipossihle that children of tender years should bo heard indulging' in such vile expressions as were hound from some young imps, in the Recreation Ground jesteiday. Choicest liillingsgatc was not to be compared will) their disgusting language. If t'ho natural guardians of such children do not T'ccognise their responsibilities a lew applications 0/ the hheh rod at the instance of a magistrate might have a beneficial effect. An extraordinary pigeon story was told by Captain Butler, of the ship Port Jackson, on arrival from Sydney. Leaving Sydney ok the last voyage the boatswain purchased two pigeons, which, on the journey to became very tame. On the arrival of the ship at London docks the birds were sold to a gentleman at West Kensington. Three weeks Later the pigeons returned to the vonsv'l, then lying in the East India Dock. They stayed for a fortnight, and then disappeared, the captain presuming that they had been trapped. Tiie ship proceeded to sea, but when two days out from Gravosvnd one of the pigeons in an exhausted condition came on board. After a while It flow away, and returned a 1 ttle later with the other bird, which was a 1.'.0 in an exhausted state.— South Wales Echo.
" This is not a guessing Competition," said tbe S.M. yesterday morning- to Dr. MeCloland, who in his evidence stilted Constable Russell had lost about half a stone in weight during, the illness cyns<kjuenl on injuries received whilst •rrasHing a drunken man. The medico was not ho easily non-plussed, and said it was- no guess. '• How do you know how much he lost '/" queried tbe Magistrate. " From my experience as a medical practitioner," was the quick reply, the doctor going on to say thut he could substantiate his statement. He had known the constable ,for years, and anyone coufd see to what extent he had lost flesh. The S.M.,however, considered a court of law was not the place for making haphazard statements. The prisoner asked Dr. McCleland a few minute* afterwards to give an estimate 01 tho distance between two pointy. The gonial doctor, however, did not know, and refused to guess, remarking that sinew the magistrate had held it was a crime to guess he was not going to make a criminal of himself.
Whatever hard swearing there might have ln-cn going cm. within die walls of that structure in Kliham culled a courthouse last week during the hearing of the civil action—W. Howell v. Avery—we do not profess to know, but liiat indulged in by the poor, shivering witnesses who were ordered out of court was just about as strong as we have ever heard. They wero squatted about the doorway on their hams and heels like squaws, from ten in the morning till three in the afternoon, waiting to be called. Fortu-I nately the hotel was close by, so that some ran over at times iust to warm their toes by the fire, 'it is really 100 bad that shelter is not piowdoil for witnesses in such cases' Had the day been wet and women numbered amongst the unfortunates the potation would have been oven worse. 11 i, man drives his horse into an Kltham stable yard the animal is taken out, rugiged and rod. ■but the witnesses were compelled to remain outside the court.
