POSITION BECOMING ACUTE. KEEN SUSPENSE IN RUSSIA. LONDON, August 2. The Standard reports that only one defensible position remains between General Kuroki and Liao-yang. There is the keenest suspense in Russia. EXTREMES OF TEMPERATURE. HEAVY WORK UNDER HOT CONDITIONS. LONDON, August 2. In Sunday's battle the Russian batteries on the left flank iired 4842 shots in four hours. The troops suffered heat of a temperature of 112 deg. A shell carried away General Keller's legs, and another shattered his skull. REPORT FROM KUROPATKIN. JAPANESE IN OCCUPATION OF SIMU-CHENU. LONDON, August 2. Referring to the Russian east front, General Kuropatkin says the Japanese turned the right flunk of the Ikavwtan position, but the Russians held their ground in the Yang-ze-limg Pass. General Keller, watching from a battery exposed to the worst fire, was wounded, and succumbed in twenty minutes. , It is reported from Tokio that the Japanese have occupied Simu-cheng.-NEWS FROM KUROKI. JAPANESE CRACK A HARD NUT ON SUNDAY. (Received August 3, 11.36 p.m.) LONDON, August 3. General Kuroki reports that he is attacking two divisions of Russians at KusShu-lien-tze, four miles west of. Hai-heyen (? Hai-cheng), two divisions and- a half at Yang-tze-llng, and six west of Mb-tien-ling. Both armies reached 25 miles west of liao-yang. At sunset on Sunday both Russian wings at Kushu-lien-tze were defeated, but owing to their large force and strong positions the fact was not disclosed till noon on Monday. The victors . pursued the Russians, who fled to Au-ming. The principal positions at Yang-tze-ling were carried at sunset, but a l>ortion of the enemy stubbornly i-esistcd. The attack was resumed on Monday, and the height captured, the Russians fleeing to Tang-ho-yan. Some field pieces were captured.
