INTERESTING TO BOROUGHS. (Per Press Association.) INVEKCARGILL, August 2. Mr Justice Denniston has delivered judgment in the appeal case the. Corporation v, tho Southland Meat Company, a retailing firm doing business in town in meat BuppHcd from tho Frozen Meat Company's works and inspected by a Government veterinarian. The defendant company, by verbal agreement with the mayor, hud paint the Corporation abattoir fees on moat sold, but the council later oil repudiated tho arrangement and refused to accept the fees, with intent to compel tho 'defendants to slaughter at the abattoirs. They determined to sell, and the corporation took action to stop the sales. The Judge held that tho corporation must iix and accept fees; further that scctfon 27 of the Slaughtering Act implied a right to sell and expose' for sale meat slaughtered at any meat export slaughterhouse in the district possessing a registered ojbuttoir, subject to a liability to pay as toll (in the shape of fees) a sum not larger than will provide that such abattoir, pay working expenses and five per cent, on the capital cost; The seCtSon p,ro« vided authority to sell upon terms of paying tecs, not for prohibiting until fees were paid, and that these fees must bo demanded or bo capable of being tendered. His Honour thought it very doubtful if a person selling meat from a meat export slaughterhouse could be guilty of an offence under section 17. The appeal was dismissed with ten guineas costs.
