The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable market report from the AgentGeneral, dated London, 30th ult. : During the past week thers has been a good demand for prime quality mutton, and there is still more inclination to purchase than previously. An appreciable scarcity of prime quality mutton exists. Tho average price to-day of Canterbury mutton, biggeat weights, is 4Jd, average quality Canterbury mutton 4{d, other brands North Island mutton, light weights, 4jd ; average quality of other North Island brands 3Jd. Lamb market.—Very tirm. The stocks of lamb on hajqd are light and firmly held in few hands. Beef.—Tho market u still very.tirm on account of the strike in America. The stock of New Zealand beef on hand is light. Average price to-day: Hind-quarters New Zealand beef 5Jd, fores 3Jd. Butter.—The market is firm owing to tho dry season here, There are large stocks of butter in cold store. The average price of choicest Now Zealand butter to-day is 92s per cwt., Danish 103s, Siberian 83s, Canadian 88s per cwt. There is a better demand for choose. The average price of finest New Zealand cheese to-day is 40s per cwt. Hemp.—The market is rather unsettled. The price of Now Zealand hemp, good (air Wellington grade, on spot, to-day is £29 10s per ton, July (o September shipments £29 per ton. HOMEBTJSH STOCK SALES. (Received August 1, 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY. August 1. At Homebush sheep sold at improved prices, best wethers making 20s to 21s, extra 23s Od, good 18s lid. No ewes were offered.
